Why Does DSCC Have Fundraisers?

Don’t You Already Get My Tax Dollars?

We are often asked why we raise money through fundraisers and why we are always asking for donations.

Many people believe that DSCC is a government agency that regularly receives funding from tax dollars to pay for the services we provide. We are, in fact, a non-profit organization, created in 1975 because there is not a government agency providing all the various services our seniors need.

Part of our ongoing effort to serve seniors, our team regularly applies for any available grants and funding offered by the government and from private organizations and entities to help us fund the services our seniors need. And while we do receive government grants, as a whole, those grants only cover approximately 50% of the total cost of the services we provide. So without securing additional funding, many of our services simply are not possible to provide.

Sharing Our Need

You will see us regularly asking for donations and financial support from individuals and from local businesses. While funding the services is critical, it is also important that we help educate others that tax dollars do not fund our organization and about the growing needs of seniors in our communities.

Since 2020, we have seen a 40% increase in demand for our Home Delivered Meal, Well-Being Check and other services.

The COVID Impact

As with many organizations, COVID has had an impact on our organization as well. When COVID hit, many of government agencies that regularly supported DSCC through grants and funding redirected their resources to combat COVID and used those fund for public health. In 2020 and 2021, due to COVID guidelines and restrictions, we were unable to have our semi-annual fundraising galas. This had a further impact on our ability to raise funds and awareness of the needs of our seniors.

Individuals and organizations who regularly supported DSCC began to refocus their support to other causes or scaled back due to uncertainty. While things are getting back to pre-COVID levels, many familiar sources of funding have not yet come back.

Your Support

When you support DSCC at a fundraiser or through a one-time or ongoing donation, 80% of your donation directly funds the services we provide our seniors. You can trust that your generosity will have its intended impact on others.

Let’s Partner

Seniors are a forgotten part of our society. As people age, they tend to be less visible and active in our communities. Because of health concerns, especially since the COVID pandemic, seniors are more prone to staying inside and isolated. As a result, we don’t always hear of seniors suffering from depression, social isolation or experiencing food insecurity.

We encourage partnership with individuals and local businesses to get involved, advocate for seniors and help fund our mission. If you are a business who is committed to giving back to others, we encourage you to connect with us. We will make it easy for you and your team to get involved and make a difference.
