The Importance of Grandparents
Grandparents play a huge role in family life, they give extra love and support to the family dynamic. This week our blog post will be highlighting all of the great contributions grandparents bring to a family, in honor of Grandparents Day.
Grandparents can bring additional support to a family and can help with over exhausted parents who need a break. Having an extra set of hands around is always great to have around the house. Most grandparents enjoy spending the extra time watching a movie or playing a board game while dad gets an extra load of laundry done or mom works a little later that day. This can alleviate some of the stress from parents, making family life more enjoyable.
Grandparents are a wealth of knowledge and share wonderful stories that brighten imaginations of both older and younger children. Stories like this teach children about their ancestry, important family traditions and are very entertaining. In some instants listening to a grandparent’s stories can ignite a child’s interest and lead to learning a new skill set. If grandma is talking about sewing back in the Great Depression this can spark a child to want to learn how to sew based on hearing a great story.
Yes, grandparents benefit their children and grandchildren but what is the benefits of this interaction for grandparents?
Grandchildren can make their grandparents feel young again and teach them new technology skills. Teaching grandparent’s basic functions of a smartphone and how to use Facebook or other social media sites is a huge benefit. As adults age they become less mobile and might not be able to complete simple task in the home. Grandchildren can help their grandparents cook; clean or other household chores they may not be able to do anymore.
While Grandparents Day comes only one day a year, Grandparents Day can be ANY DAY.
So spend an extra hour with your grandparents or call them for more than just a quick hello! They have been waiting for your phone or visit and are excited to hear what you have to say!
