February 29th comes around every four years in what we call a Leap Year. 2024 is a Leap Year, which means we have an “extra day” at the end of February. While some may just see it as any other day, others choose to use this day as a fresh start or as a holiday! We’re here to give you some ideas if you choose to make the most out of your “extra day”.
Why Do We Have Leap Years?
Leap Years occur every four years to make up for the extra hours that go over our typical 365 days. Earth’s rotation around the sun technically takes 365.25 days, so in order to keep the 12-month calendar lined up, the average year gets cut down to 365 days. The extra day every four years accounts for the hours that get cut off during the non-leap years.
Leap Day Activities
If you’re looking to make the most out of your Leap Day, we’re here to suggest some activities you can take part in!
- Clean Up and Declutter Your Space – Use February 29th as a refresh day! Go through your closet and donate some clothes you no longer use or connect with. You can donate unwanted items to your local shelter or thrift store if they are still in good condition. You can also do some easy pre-spring cleaning, enjoying a day of light dusting, sweeping, etc. Make it fun by playing some music or gathering others to help!
- Enjoy Lunch with Friends – Call up your close friends and enjoy a little lunch date in celebration of Leap Day! You can even visit one of DSCC/KSC’s Senior Dining locations to enjoy lunch with friends or get to know other senior diners to make new friends!
- Make Some Leap Day Crafts – Put your handiwork to the test and make some crafts for Leap Day! These can be cards, knitted goods, or whatever medium you like! Frogs are a common Leap Day theme if you want to incorporate some into your designs. If you feel like sharing your crafts with others, you can donate some to our intergenerational program to be passed out to other seniors!
A New Perspective on Leap Day
While February 29th may feel like any other day for most people, anyone can jump on the opportunity to treat it as a reason to celebrate. Only occurring every four years can make this day feel more special if you take on a new perspective and make a point to view the day as an extra opportunity for a good day.
You can always look to DSCC / KSC for opportunities to make the most out of any day. Visit www.dupageseniorcouncil.org and www.kaneseniorcouncil.org for more information.
