Discover The Healing Power of Pets for Our Seniors
Many seniors have pets and for good reason. Health experts agree that pets can help keep seniors healthy. The benefits are manyfold from experiencing real companionship, getting exercise, creating a daily routine as well as releasing everyday tension. Plus add the benefits of meeting new people, providing a sense of purpose, and not to be forgotten providing protection, a senior gets a great deal of support from a pet. It is not uncommon to hear our seniors say that their pet is their best friend.
The National Poll on Healthy Aging surveyed 2,051 adults aged 50 to 80, more than half of whom reported owning a pet. 88% said that their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86% said their pets made them feel loved. The poll, sponsored by the AARP and the University of Michigan, also reported that 79% of senior pet parents said that their four-legged (or feathered, or finned) friends reduced stress.

The Serious Health Benefits for Seniors with Pets
The health ramifications of having a pet for seniors goes beyond emotional and psychological. There has been a slew of research suggesting stroking and even talking to a pet lowers blood pressure and heart rate. This may lead to an increase in life expectancy. It has been shown that stroking a pet can result in a chemical reaction such as producing serotonin, prolactin, oxytocin, and other stress-reducing chemicals.
Pets Need Caretaking Too
The relationship between seniors and their pets is two-way. Pets need caretaking and food/water in their bowls. Many seniors living alone need assistance not only with their wellbeing but also with the care of their trusted friends. It is common to learn that seniors who get meals delivered end up sharing some with their pets.
Help Take Care of Our Senior’s Best Friends
We know that for some of our seniors, their pet means everything to them. But for some, caring for their pet adds stress to their lives. That is why we have our Pet Care and Food Assistance service for those seniors who sometimes find difficulty taking care of themselves and their pets.
We are committed to not only taking care of our seniors but also of their best friends.
How Does The Pet Care and Food Assistance Service Work?
Our Pet Care and Food Assistance service help seniors by providing pet food and veterinary visits for their pet. We have volunteers who can stop by our senior’s homes to deliver pet food, eliminating the worry of getting pet food.
We understand how important a pet can be to an older adult. Whether they live in nursing homes, shared condos, or in their own homes, seniors need our support not only to keep them safe and protected but to assist them in taking care of their ‘best friends.’
