3 Services We Offer to Help Seniors Get Ready for Fall

With summer quickly coming to an end the ever-dreaded list of fall chores is piling up. Getting your home ready for the fall is no easy task, the chores only get hard as you get older. Older adults have an especially hard time getting ready for the change in seasons. There are many obstacles that older adults face such as limited mobility, loss of balance and impaired vision that can make it almost impossible to take on simple fall tasks. DuPage Senior Citizens Council offers multiple ways to help an older adult prep for the change in weather.

Three services we provide that are perfect to help are Minor Home Repairs, Yard Clean-Ups and Friendly Visits and Assistance.

Yard-Clean Ups are our twice a year service we provide to older adults in DuPage County in the spring and fall. Volunteers will go out to an older adults’ home who needs assistance preparing their yard for fall by raking leaves and picking up any trash or debris that has collected throughout the season. This volunteer service is wildly popular amongst large groups such as girl/boy scout groups, churches and business.

Our Minor Home Repair Service is a fee for service that helps older adults with small projects around the home. The price is $40.00 plus the cost of material. The service can help an older adult prepare for the winter by trimming bushes, cleaning gutters (on first floor only) and raking leaves. Other services that may be helpful are weather stripping, caulking windows and changing filters on heating systems.

If an older adult does need help inside or outside Friendly Visits & Assistance is there to help. This service is great for making an older adult feel safe in their home, along with providing one-hour socialization. A volunteer can help make sure the inside of the home is tidy for the upcoming season and has enough necessities for the colder weather (blankets, bottled water, flashlights).

Volunteers are encouraged to help an older adult make their house feel like a home. A volunteer can help decorate a home with fall decorations to make it feel more festive for the upcoming Halloween and Thanksgiving season. Older adults and volunteer can share a special bond as they interact during the most joyous time of the year.
